“A Hymn to Freedom & Rebellion” is a concept of adaptive reuse which focuses on individual/personal interpretations and collective perceptions of historical buildings and their functional capacities. The design process challenges the physical limitations of an existing disused jail building drawing inspirations from the remnants of history and myth, hence with references to ancient architecture. The project brief was for a boutique hotel in a decaying/disused jail building. Consequently, the term ‘boutique hotel’ was redefined, shifting the focus onto the experiential and sensual components of space. Immersed in historical references, the illustration offers a vision of a dream-like ambiance which transcends temporal and dimensional frames, but which is, at the same time, incarcerated in the boundaries of human experience
