The existing historical building of Sligo Gaol is retained and conserved to emphasize its architectural heritage. My design intention is to insert a ‘building within a building’, so as to give the hotel a fresh and modern look inside. Containers, which form a new building within the historical shell, define internal space and accommodate guest rooms. The public areas of the hotel, bar, café and restaurant, float freely and offer a variety of micro-spaces leading a visitor to the museum section of the hotel. Within the stone walls, timber and steel are used to compliment the interior while forming unique spatial features.
